This painting by artist Zao Wou-Ki just sold for $65,000,000 and it’s actually quite amazing
What’s the most expensive painting you’ve ever heard of? Perhaps a Rembrandt or a Picasso - but there’s a good chance that you haven’t heard of the work by Zao Wou-Ki. Well, the Chinese-French painter’s Juin-Octobre 1985 is now the most expensive painting ever sold at auction by an Asian artist.
#AuctionUpdate: ‘Juin-Octobre 1985’, the largest work by Franco-Chinese artist Zao Wou-Ki, sold for HK$510m / US$65m: world auction record for Zao Wou-Ki, world auction record for an oil painting by an Asian artist, most valuable painting sold by any auction house in #HongKong pic.twitter.com/wyEbE9zGYC— Sotheby's (@Sothebys) September 30, 2018
The sale of the painting now puts Zao’s work among the super elite American contemporary artists like Newman, Rothko, and Kooning. According to Bloomberg, the painting was originally commissioned by world-renown architect I.M Pei, purchased back in 2005 for $2.3 million and was then later sold for a 2,735% profit. The massive 32.8 ft by 9.2 ft painting is also the largest painting Zao ever made.
Although Zoa passed away in 2013 at the age of 93, his style will live on through pieces like Juin-Octobre 1985 forever. Let us know what you think about the amazing piece in the comments section below and be sure to subscribe to The Sitch for more interesting art news and other entertaining reads.
