Uber is launching electric scooters this week

Starting this week, commuters can use Uber to ride a scooter to work

For years, Uber has been known as the ride-sharing app. It then expanded into food delivery with Uber Eats, began experimenting with self-driving cars, and now it’s supplying electric scooters.

Uber's Jump electric scooter share program is launching this week in Santa Monica, California. Uber recently purchased Jump - which offers dockless electric bike sharing - for roughly $100 million.

In a statement, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, said that electric bikes and scooters are becoming the future of urban transportation and that in the next 10 years, Uber will likely offer as many bikes and scooters as it does cars. According to Khosrowshahi, Uber wants to be “the Amazon of transportation. And hopefully, 10 years from now, no one in the audience is going to own a car."

Commuters who are interested in testing out the Uber scooters can use the same Uber app they use for rides to claim a Jump electric scooter and the rides will cost $1 to rent and users will also have to pay an additional $0.15 per minute.
