Election Day is coming up and Uber is offering $10 rides to get you to the polls
Uber is encouraging riders to vote by offering $10 rides to the polls on Election Day
Election Day is a big deal - it's when we, the people vote for who is going to be making some pretty big decisions in our government. This election is particularly important because it is the midterm elections, which fall in the middle of a president's four-year term. Because our current political climate is so polarized and both the House of Representatives and the Senate are made up of primarily the Republican party, these midterm elections are crucial for both parties (the Democrats want to become the majority and the Republicans want to maintain their current majority hold). Uber understands the importance of getting people to the polls and they want to make it even easier for people to vote by offering $10 rides to the polls on Election Day (November 6).
On Election Day, Uber will have a poll locator button in the app that will allow voters to find their polling place and book a ride there. The poll locator button will be available to anyone in the United States but will be primarily geared towards the voters who live in suburban and rural areas that are not within walking distance of a poll. Once the rider finds their poll, they only need to select that as their destination and Uber will offer a $10 discounted ride. However, the voters ride back home or to work will be at a regular Uber price.
Uber is also partnering with #VoteTogether to provide free rides (up to $7) in certain communities. Uber also sent out an email to all of its riders and drivers encouraging them to visit one of Uber's Greenlight Hubs where they can register to vote.
According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, approximately 15 million people didn't vote in the 2016 election due to a lack of transportation. We hope that voters will take advantage of the cheaper ride share option through Uber and head to the polls on voting day.
