Time Magazine has announced the 'Person of the Year' to be 'The Guardians'
Time Magazine will feature journalists who have been killed or imprisoned as 2018's 'Person of the Year'
Every year, Time Magazine announces who the most influential person of the year was - regardless of whether or not the impact was positive. For example, Hitler was featured as the Person of the Year in 1939. In recent years, though, Time has begun featuring groups as opposed to a single person. Last year it was the people of the #MeToo movement and this year's Person (or People) of the Year are journalists who have either been killed or imprisoned due to their line of work. Time Magazine is referring to these journalists as 'The Guardians.'
The Time Magazine edition will feature specific journalists like Jamal Khashoggi, The Capital Gazette, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, and Maria Ressa. Jamal Khashoggi was brutally killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey after he wrote columns on the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salan. The CIA has confirmed that they believe Salman himself ordered the murder.
The Capital Gazette victims were four journalists and a sales associate who were fatally shot in a mass shooting in Maryland in July. The gunman had allegedly sued the newspaper and lost which led to his shooting the newspaper's office.
Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were Reuters journalists who were sentenced to seven years of prison in Myanmar because they broke some law while writing on the military's mass killing of Rohingya Muslims.
Maria Ressa was the CNN bureau chief that started the online news site 'Rappler,' which spurned a "campaign of legal harassment" from Duterte's Department of Justice.
