What Will Be The Best Startup In The Middle East This Year?
The Startup Battlefield is like the olympics for early-stage startups
The Startup Battlefield (hosted by TechCrunch) is a competition where startups pitch their next great idea for an opportunity to win $25,000 (without giving up any equity) and a trip for two to the TechCrunch's Disrupt, which is like round 2 of the competition.
The Startup Battlefield MENA 2018 will shine a light on early-stage startups in the Middle East and North Africa - the first pitch competition that has been hosted in this region.
Why it matters
The startups who attend the Battlefield are likely the startups who are going to be making headlines in years to come. Past winners of the competition include Getaround, Yammer, Mint, and Alfred. Each of those startups is worth at least $31 million and are still actively growing and expanding.
TechCrunch hosts a slew of Battlefields throughout the year in places like South America, Africa, San Francisco, and Berlin. The first ever MENA Battlefield will take place in Beirut, Lebanon on October 3 and tickets just went on sale this week.
The MENA Battlefield will consist of up to 15 teams that will compete in 3 preliminary rounds (5 startups per round). Each team will have 6 minutes to present a live demo to a panel of tech and VC experts - who will then have the opportunity to ask the founders tough, pointed questions (a la Shark Tank).
Only 5 lucky teams will move on to the final round and only 1 startup will earn the title of the Best Startup in the Middle East and North Africa and reigning champion of this year's competition. Aside from the pride of winning, they will also receive a monetary prize of $25,000.
Tickets are only $29 (and then of course, guests would have to fly to Lebanon) and the competition will take place in front of a live audience of entrepreneurs, startup founders, investors, and tech heads. Even if the flight is expensive, it would still be super cool to attend the first startup competition in the Middle East.
