Now there is a robot that looks, talks and moves like a human
A robotics team in Hong Kong has created the first-ever Artificial Intelligence robot that looks and moves like a human - it even has facial expressions
In movies, there has always been a sci-fi fantasy that one day there would be robots that blend in with the human species. There have been instances where robots have even replaced true genuine relationships in film and now that opportunity is becoming a reality. Meet Sophia, a robot who incorporates Artificial Intelligence to have conversations and can even react with facial expressions to conversations.
David Hanson, the founder of Hanson Robotics who created Sophia, says that Sophia can "represent a number of emotional states, and she can also see emotional expressions on a human face as well." Sophia can simulate every major muscle in the human face and the robot will be able to "see" our expressions and she will try to emulate and understand the situation.
Hanson claims that Sophia is a "tool for science in studying human to human interaction," but the line is definitely becoming quite blurry between "robot for scientific research" and "friend." This was probably the goal from the start as Hanson believes that technology can actually help humans to reach a higher understanding of ourselves and the emotions we carry.
Sophia is a busy lady, having gone to Shanghai Fashion Week and wearing clothes designed by British artist Sadie Clayton. More interesting, though, is the fact that Sophia legally became a citizen in Saudi Arabia - making her the first robot ever to have a nationality.
