Watch Serena Williams in this chilling video about domestic violence

Serena Williams is not only a world-renowned tennis player, but she is also a spokeswoman for female empowerment, breast cancer awareness, and domestic violence and abuse

Earlier this week, Serena Williams posted a video of her singing "I Touch Myself" to promote early detection of breast cancer. Now, in a video released on October 3, Williams is looking to raise awareness for National Domestic Violence Month.

In the video, Williams lists the signs that are typically associated with domestic violence. Some of the signs she lists out are walking with a limp, bruises, and speaking with a shaky voice. After listing off the physical signs, she asks the viewer, "what about the abuse you can't see?"

The video goes on to talk about financial abuse - an invisible way that an abuser holds the victim captive in the relationship. Examples of financial abuse are restrictions on spending, limited bank account access, little to no job opportunities, and poor credit. The video was developed in partnership with the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse campaign, of which Williams is an ambassador. The focus of the video is on the financial abuse because it's incredibly controlling and nearly impossible to see - and it's one of the main reasons that a victim will stay in an abusive relationship.

In a press release from the Allstate Foundation, Williams said, "I'm proud to speak up for women who can't use their voices and let them know we're working to end the cycle of abuse. I hope that after viewing the video, people will be more aware of the hidden signs of financial abuse and they'll understand the need to help those who've been burdened by it."

Williams has also designed a purple purse which anyone that donates at least $10 to the Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month will be entered for a chance to win.
