Is Season 6 The End For Orange Is The New Black?

Everyone’s favorite inmates are back for Orange Is The New Black season 6

Orange Is The New Black released its sixth season yesterday and if you didn’t spend all day binge watching – we’ve got everything you need to know about season 6. Orange Is The New Black is based on a novel by Piper Kerman telling her story about being held in a women’s prison for a year.

The plot follows Piper as she is sentenced to 15 months at Litchfield Penitentiary. Piper was  convicted for transporting a suitcase full of drug money for her girlfriend, Alex who was an international drug smuggler. The drug offense happened ten years before her conviction. During those years, Piper had moved on towards a quiet, law abiding life as a middle class engaged woman in New York City. Her sudden indictment caused quite a rustle amongst her new friends and fiancé.

Season 6 picks up roughly a week after a 3 day riot at Litchfield leaving some of the inmates to be transferred to a maximum security prison. Piper spends the majority of the first half of the season asking everyone “Where’s Alex?” Alex apparently wasn't transferred to the higher security prison, to Piper's dismay - at least for the first few episodes. Season 6 also introduces us to a few new characters, namely Daddy, Barbara, Badison, and Copeland.

Rotten Tomatoes critic, Sophie Gilbert, says this about season 6: “Some episodes are dazzling, some sloppy, but Orange and its creator, Jenji Kohan, are still pulling off tricks and twists that few other shows dare attempt.” Rotten Tomatoes gives the overall season a rating of 87%.

Metacritic’s Verne Gray says that “Fans who hated the fifth season should mostly love the sixth, which is a return to normal, or as "normal" as "OITNB" ever gets. But the end does feel a little bit closer.” The overall rating on Metacritic was 67%.

Alan Sepinwall, Rolling Stone, gave the season a 3 out of 5 and said “maximum security, medium payoff.”

Orange Is The New Black is already signed on for a season 7, which very well could be the last season of the series. The show is available for streaming on Netflix.
