Manami Ito Playing The Violin With Her Prosthetic Arm Will Blow Your Mind
We’ve heard of athletes running with prosthetic legs, but Manami Ito playing the violin with her prosthetic arm is something else
Meet Manami Ito. She was in a traffic accident in 2004 where she lost her right arm. A nursing student at the time, she decided to put her dreams on hold and pursue other options.
Ito went to pick up her new artificial arm when she saw people playing basketball with their artificial limbs - that gave Ito an idea. She went back to school and decided to continue to pursue her dreams - despite there never having been a nurse with a fake limb in Japan before. She is now the first Japanese nurse to have a prosthetic arm. However, nursing patients back to health is not all that Ito is capable of - she’s also become a Paralympian swimmer and is currently touring the country as a violinist.
Ito first picked up playing the violin with her prosthetic arm in 2016. The bow is custom made to work with her arm and there is a guide attached to the violin itself that helps keep the bow in place as Ito plays. She’s able to play the stringed instrument beautifully and with amazing precision - even playing multiple strings at once!
It’s pretty amazing what science can do - especially with regards to prosthetic limbs. Let us know what you think in the comments section and be sure to subscribe to The Sitch for more music news and other entertaining reads.
