The New Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens Is A Game Changer For Photographers

The new Laowa 24mm f/14 probe lens is one of the coolest macro lenses we have ever seen

A lot of us here at The Sitch are really into photography. Many of us use our mirrorless camera to shoot nearly every day. If you’ve ever seen a photo that looks really zoomed in (think small insects or the inside of a flower), then there’s a good chance that it was shot using a macro lens. Simply put, macro photography is a style of extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects and living organisms.

Laowa’s parent company Venus Optics is a Chinese lens manufacturer that develops a variety of prime camera lenses (many of which are also macro lenses) which are actually pretty affordable. Their newest lens, the 24mm f/14 probe lens is a macro lens that’s going to be a true game-changer for photographers around the world.

While the lens may resemble the barrel of a sniper rifle, it works extremely hard for the photographer using it. Whereas most macro lenses have a longer focal length and isolate much of the frame around it, the 24 mm wide-angle paired with the constant f/14 aperture instead keeps much of the frame in focus when focusing at close distances. This will allow photographers to tell much more of a story instead of having the majority of the background be out of focus.

The bug eye look is great for shooting anything from ant colonies to pizzas. The 2:1 maximum magnification allows you to get extremely close to a subject, revealing details that might not otherwise be seen by the naked eye. The long barrel also lets you stay about 15.7" away from your subject, which is helpful when you’re shooting animals, insects and lethal snakes.

The barrel lens also happens to be waterproof and has a built-in LED light for when you’re shooting in tight, low lit areas. Because the barrel is only 0.2cm in diameter, you’re able to poke and pull the lens through the tightest of spaces. The video below shows some examples of some of the dynamic shots one is able to capture with the 24mm f/14 probe lens.

The lens is currently being sold on Kickstarter and while the crazy super early bird deal of $1,099 is no longer available, you can still reserve one today for $1,399 – which is still $100 less than what the lens will retail for.

We're extremely excited to get our hands on one of these impressive lenses. Let us know what you think about the fancy new Laowa macro lens in the comments section below and be sure to subscribe to The Sitch for more interesting photography news and other entertaining reads.
