Hurricane Florence Survivor Stories: Kitten Edition
Many people have needed rescuing from Florence, including an adorable kitten, appropriately named “Survivor”
Tropical storm Florence, which started out as a category 4 hurricane, is making its way across the southeast coast and the Carolinas. Flooding is the main concern with this storm and survival stories are beginning to emerge.
In New Bern, NC floodwaters began to rise on Friday and approximately 150 people were in need of rescuing. Robert Simmons was among the rescued, along with his precious little kitten Survivor.
Andrew Carter, of The Charlotte Observer, posted a photo on Twitter of Simmons on a rescue boat with his kitten resting on his shoulder and hugging his neck.
Meet Robert Simmons. Was stuck in his house since last night, when floodwaters began to rise in New Bern. A boat came and rescued him just now. He was sad to leave his father but left with his kitten hugging his neck. Cat’s name: Survivor, Simmons said. #HurricaneFlorence2018 pic.twitter.com/vRR3lANDJe— Andrew Carter (@_andrewcarter) September 14, 2018
According to Carter, “Simmons said he’d had the cat for weeks, and yet when asked what the cat’s name was, Simmons gave an answer that almost sounded scripted, and too good to be true. Perhaps he’d improvised in the moment.”
The Charlotte Observer also created a video of the rescue mission in New Bern which shows a few people being picked up from their flooded homes. The water was about waist deep and expected to continue to rise with the continued rainfall from Florence.
Simmons had to leave his father, who chose to remain at their home in New Bern, but Survivor is definitely a lucky kitty to have been saved from the storm.
