Keira Knightley has banned her daughter from certain Disney movies
Keira Knightley disagrees with some of the "classic" Disney films and won't let her 3-year-old daughter watch them
Keira Knightley has starred in a few Disney blockbuster films like Pirates of the Caribbean and The Nutcracker (coming out this November). However, as much as Knightley may enjoy Disney films, there are certain films that she has officially banned her daughter from watching.
There are two films specifically that Knightley refuses to allow her daughter to watch: Cinderella and The Little Mermaid. Knightley feels that both films conflict with the image of a strong, independent woman who doesn't rely on or give everything up for a man. On The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Knightley revealed why the two films are banned from her daughter’s film catalog.
Cinderella is banned because Cinderella "waits around for a rich guy to rescue her." Knightley continued by saying, "Don't! Rescue yourself, obviously!" However, Knightley feels more strongly about banning The Little Mermaid - which she said she was actually "quite annoyed about because [she] really likes the film." Knightley won't allow her daughter to watch The Little Mermaid because while she loves the songs, she feels no woman should give up her voice for a man.
Joining Knightley in the fight against certain Disney films is actress Kristen Bell. Bell is concerned that certain Disney films might teach children the wrong lesson about consent. Bell is most concerned by the film Snow White because the prince kisses Snow White without her permission.
Thankfully, this is a problem that Disney appears to be aware of with recent movies like Frozen (Bell played the voice of Anna) and Moana featuring strong girls who don't even end up with men in the end.
