John Legend Becomes The Youngest And The First Black Man To Achieve EGOT
Grammy? Check. Tony? Check. Oscar? Check. Emmy? Check.
Sunday, September 9, John Legend not only became the youngest person to ever achieve EGOT status, but he also became the first black man to receive an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
Legend holds an Oscar award for Best Original Song for his song “Glory” in the movie Selma. His Tony award is for Jitney, a Broadway show that he co-produced. The play went on to win Best Play Revival. The singer also has a whopping 10 Grammy awards. Finally, at the 2018 Emmy Awards, he received an Emmy for his portrayal of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar Live.
Legend is not the only one who made history last night as an EGOT - Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice also became EGOT holders for Jesus Christ Superstar Live. For three performers to reach EGOT status in one night was an incredible feat. Since Richard Rodgers became the first performer to receive an EGOT in 1962, there have only been 12 total EGOT winners. After the 2018 Emmy Awards, there are now a total of 15 EGOT holders.
Legend’s wife, Chrissy Teigen, wasted no time in showing her pride and posted a total of 4 Instagram posts to commemorate the huge win for her husband.

After John won last night, he came to lip sync battle, just to hang out as he always does. I lost my voice so he ended up being co-commentator with me and I think it might have been the most random, ridiculous episode we have ever made. I cannot wait for you guys to see!! Thank you to the entire @lipsyncbattle crew for letting me run away between shows to see john’s historical EGOT win!! I love you guys so much. @caseypattersontv @paramountnetwork ❤️❤️❤️
To achieve an EGOT is no easy feat, and it’s quite clear that Legend has the love and support of his wife and that warms our hearts.
