How Sean Belnick Made Millions Of Dollars Selling Chairs
Sean Belnick, CEO of Belnick, Inc. made over $42 million in his twenties by selling chairs on BizChair.com
This story might be a bit old but it’s amazing how a 20-year-old was able to make millions of dollars while still in college by selling such a simple product: chairs. Sean Belnick founded the website BizChair.com back in 2001 when he was only 14 years old. Starting with an initial investment from his stepfather, Gary Glazer, Belnick was able to quickly grow the company, generating $37.5 million in revenue in 2007 and $42 million in 2008 before graduating from Emory University and coming on as CEO full-time.
Before moving the company to its first commercial 40,000-square-foot warehouse in 2004, Belnick completely ran the company out of his bedroom. Within three years, BizChair’s warehouse grew to an even larger 327,000-square-foot facility in Canton, Georgia where the company is now headquartered.
While it started with chairs, BizChair.com now sells all types of furniture, ranging from folding tables to restaurant and school furniture. Belnick has even sold chairs to some of the world’s most well-known companies like Microsoft, Google, and Abercrombie & Fitch.
It’s been reported that Belnick’s inspiration to start Bizchair.com started with his fascination of selling things online – including Pokemon cards and other things on eBay. He’s also said that other than his splurge of a 2008 Range Rover Supercharged, Belnick doesn’t spend much of the money he makes and instead reinvests it into the stock market. Although his Tumbler profile states that he's an "Entrepreneur and Aviator" so he might have purchased a plane or two since the Range Rover.
Belnick has been featured on CNN and Inc.'s Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30, while Bizchair.com has won numerous awards, ranging from No. 37 in Inc.'s list of Top 100 Retail Companies to Orion Energy’s Systems’ Environmental Stewardship Award for the company’s reduction in energy consumption using Orion’s lighting platform.
While it’s been over a decade, Belnick is still CEO of Bizchair.com, which has since evolved into Belnick, Inc. and is now located in Reno, Olive Branch, and Etowah in addition to its Canton location. According to its website, Belnick, Inc. has a mission to “cultivate a positive and productive workplace that empowers our team to provide an incredible selection of quality furniture and home décor products at unbeatable prices with fast delivery and excellent customer service.” We for one applaud Belnick’s ability to turn a $500 investment into a multi-million dollar company.
