A 7-year-old YouTube star made $22 million this year

How do you make $22 million in one year? Well, for Ryan ToysReview it's simple: play with toys and make comments to the camera. Ryan is a 7-year-old YouTube sensation who plays with his toys while making comments to the camera as he plays. According to Forbes, he made $22 million this year alone.

Ryan's Youtube channel has 17.3 million followers and his videos have a collective 26 billion views online. His channel launched in March 2015 with videos of him playing and reviewing toys and his channel grew from there. In an interview with NBC, Ryan said his toy reviews have been so successful because "I'm entertaining and I'm funny."

Chas Lacaillade, the founder and CEO of Bottle Rocket Management, says that Ryan’s success is partly due to his use of “unboxing” in his videos. “Unboxing” is a tactic that many bloggers use where they video themselves opening up something (makeup, toy, clothes) for the first time. According to Lacaillade, “Unboxing videos provide the proxy for actually experiencing the joy of receiving and opening something you really desire; this is especially true for items that are out of reach or unattainable. The next best thing to owning one is experiencing it virtually, seeing someone else play with it.”
