Emile Ratelband wants to legally change his age
This Dutch TV Personality wants to legally change his age from 69 to 49
Emile Ratelband, a TV personality and self-acclaimed “positivity guru,” has asked a court in the Netherlands to legally give him a new birthday that would make him 20 years younger on paper. Currently, Ratelband is 69 years old and he feels that he is being discriminated against because of his age.
In an interview earlier this week, Ratelband said that "with this freedom of choice, choice of name, freeness of gender, I want to have my own age. I want to control myself." He also mentioned that he has run into issues regarding his age specifically on dating websites: "If I go on Tinder, then I get women from 68, 69, when [younger] women are there." Ratelband has been quoted saying that he considers himself a “young God” and has the body of a 45-year-old.
There's no doubt that when it comes to finding a job especially, age does play a factor - but is it really so bad that it would constitute a legal "age change"? According to Marjolein van den Brink from Utrecht University, age discrimination can become a problem for people starting as young as 40-years-old, depending on the industry. Brink compares it to a gender change, saying that age discrimination happens later in life, "whereas gender is something that follows you from birth to grave, and it determines nearly everything."
So far the court has not reached a decision on the case, but it could definitely establish a new legal precedent if Ratelband is able to legally change his age. What do you think about all this?
