SpaceX To Send Japanese Billionaire Yusaku Maezawa To The Moon

Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa is taking a trip around the moon in 2023 and he wants to bring artists with him

Yesterday, Elon Musk’s SpaceX revealed who they would be sending to the moon by 2023. It was non other than 42-year-old Yusaku Maezawa from Japan. Maezawa is the richest person his age and has had a deep interest in the moon for many years. The Japanese entrepreneur made most of his money with Zozotown, Japan’s largest online clothing retailer. Forbes estimates that his total net worth is around $2.9 billion. With this flight, Maezawa will become the first private customer to ride around the Moon on SpaceX’s Big Falcon Rocket (BFR).

While Maezawa purchased every seat on the craft, the young billionaire doesn’t want to take the ride alone. He wants to seize the flight as an opportunity to bring some of the world’s best artists that much closer to the moon during the week long mission – a project that he’s calling #dearMoon.

“I would like to invite six to eight artists from around the world to join me on this mission to the Moon,” Maezawa said. “These artists will be asked to create something after they return to Earth, and these masterpieces will inspire the dreamer within all of us.” While the artists have not yet been selected, he wants to ensure that the 6-8 people chosen come from ever aspect of life, including directors, musicians, painters and more.

Maezawa’s stake in the mission is still unknown. The discussion around money and how much he was paying SpaceX for the opportunity came up several times but was never given a definitive answer. Musk also said that while they’re working towards the 2023 date, there is no guarantee that the project will hit that date or ever make it at all. We’ll just have to wait to see what the SpaceX team has to say within the coming years.
