This Dad Is Standing Up For Gay Rights And It's Heartbreakingly Beautiful
Dad stands up for the LGBTQ community in Alabama because his daughter committed suicide at the age of 23 because she was gay
Although this happened 1995, 23 years ago now, this video is trending on Buzzfeed today because it’s such a touching story and he’s really trying to spread the word about loving your children just as they are - regardless of their orientation.
The video talks about how his daughter's death led to his depression and he developed a drinking problem. After drinking himself dry, he finally decided that he had to do something for his daughter, Patti Sue. So, he built a lake and named it "Lake Patti Sue." Then he started speaking to people about the importance of loving their children no matter what.
The father, Nathan, reflects on the things he had said to his daughter in regards to her sexual orientation and he recognizes that he wasn't as supportive as he could have been - he might not have even been supportive at all. Coming from a conservative family and coming out can be a terrifying thing and this father is out to help change that by sharing his story.
Suicide is a very real thing and is especially high in the LGBTQ community - A study found that LGBTQ youth are 3 times more likely to contemplate suicide than non LGBTQ youth and for LGBTQ youth ages 10-24, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death.
