This Top Can Spin For An Entire Day
This toy top is a real-life version of what you saw in DiCaprio’s Inception – it literally spins all day long
Although a similar version of this thing has been on crowdfunding website Kickstarter before, it’s still a pretty nifty toy worth sharing. You might have played with a similar top when you were a kid, spinning it only to see it fall to its side a few seconds later, once it ran out of inertia. That’s not the case with the Limbo top, which not only holds the Guinness World Record for the longest spin time but also happens to continuously spin for 27 hours 9 minutes and 24 seconds.
But you might be asking yourself, "how is this possible?" The secret is behind the engineering inside the little top. There are two versions available, one that’s made of solid aluminum and one that’s made up of an even stronger indestructible titanium. Both versions contain a stainless steel ball at its base and feature a hollow interior which houses an electric gyroscope. The gyroscope is what enables the Limbo to keep spinning on any surface, including a table, hand, and even a pillow.
The electric gyroscope spins at an alarming speed of 10,000 RPM and doesn’t even make a sound. Unless manually stopped, the top will continue to spin anywhere between 4 to 24 hours and is charged via USB. This thing truly is a real-world version of the endless spinning top found in the movie Inception. The video below shows the Limbo top in action.
Pretty crazy, right? And for a limited time, you can still purchase one via Kickstarter for only $59 (they normally retail for $99). It's actually a pretty nice knick knack to keep on your desk while at work.
