There's A New App That Pays You For Walking Or Biking To Work
The Miles app tracks your every move and gives you points in the form of “miles” that are able to be redeemed for travel, grocery, tech, and food
How it works
After downloading Miles on the app store, users create an account and the app asks for their main mode of transportation. At The Sitch, we bike a lot - so that’s what we put. Users have to allow the app access to their phone's GPS even when the app is not on in order for it to notice when they're traveling or not.
After a trip, Miles determines which type of trip the user took, how far they traveled, and then it multiplies the trip by 5 if it’s a bike trip, 10 if it’s a walk trip and 1 if it’s a car trip.
After accumulating a certain amount of points, the user is able to redeem the points through the app.
The only catch is that most of the really cool things that Miles offers (like renting an Audi A4 for free for a day) also come with a catch like having to rent the car for at least 2 days. Some of them come without exceptions though, just an expiration date. For example, users can purchase a $5 Starbucks gift card for 2,500 miles but then it has to be used within 21 days of purchase.
The app is definitely nice if you’re traveling a lot by foot or by bike, but if a person is traveling by car it would definitely take a lot longer to accumulate the points. While the perks and rewards could definitely improve, it’s nice to get a little reward for doing something that you would already have been doing anyway.
We give it a 7/10 and would recommend it to a friend. Sign up for Miles here.
