Rihanna Makes British Vogue History
Rihanna made history by being the first black woman ever to grace the cover of the elite British Vogue September issue
In 102 years of publication, British Vogue has never featured a black woman on their cover for the September issue of the magazine. The September issue is the most elite issue of the entire year because it is known as "the fashion edition" and sets up the fashion trends for the following year. Rihanna is on the cover for September 2018, which is a huge step for the magazine.
British Vogue's editor in chief, Edward Enninful, said this in regards to the September issue featuring Rihanna: "I always knew it had to be Rihanna. A fearless music-industry icon and businesswoman, when it comes to that potent mix of fashion and celebrity, nobody does it quite like her."
For the cover, Rihanna wore a pink tulle Prada dress and neon-orange gloves from her own collection, Savage x Fenty. She was photographed by Nick Knight.
What everyone is talking about
Her eyebrows. Rihanna's eyebrows on the cover of Vogue are pencil thin - almost appearing as if they've been drawn on. Is this the latest trend for eyebrows?! While Vogue is definitely on the frontline when it comes to fashion and beauty, we certainly hope these pencil thin eyebrows don't stay around for long at all - while Rihanna can rock it, it’s definitely a fashion statement and they are probably not practical for everyday wear.
What the issue talks about
For every cover photo, comes a cover story - often in the form of an interview. In her interview with British Vogue, Rihanna opens up about dating and relationships, saying "I think a lot of people meet people and then they’re dating the idea of what the person could become, and that person never shows up and then they’re just mad disappointed." Rihanna then clarifies that “A person can always get better, they can always get worse, but you’ve got to be fine with what you met them as.”
Furthermore, Rihanna mentions how picky she can be when it comes to friendships: “I don’t like to open myself up to everyone and so when you find people who are great and loyal, you don’t want to let go of that. I’ve been out here on my own since I was a teenager, so these people become like your family.”
In other news
Beyoncé has been given "unprecedented" control over the cover of the American September issue of Vogue. Typically, Anna Wintour (editor in chief) is in charge of the cover, but she has passed the reigns to the reigning queen herself for this issue.
Beyoncé will be able to dictate what goes on the cover, which photos of her appear in the magazine, and will be able to write out the captions for the pictures. She's also making black history by hiring Tyler Mitchell for the photoshoot. Mitchell will be the first black photographer to shoot the cover of Vogue in 126 years of publication.
The cover has not been released to the public as of yet.
