How To Win $20,000 On HQ

How To Win $20,000 On HQ

Is it really possibly to win that kind of cash on the app?

You’ve definitely heard of it. You probably play it. If you don’t, then at least you've seen people at work huddle around to play it every day at 3pm. HQ has been one of the biggest viral games to hit the market since Candy Crush or Flappy Bird.

During the last Super Bowl, you might have seen a girl (Lauren May) screaming uncontrollably from winning HQ. She made it through all of the weird and hard questions to win a whopping cash prize of $11.30 after the lump sum was divided amongst her and the other winners. What was actually suprising about the spot was that the :15 ad was reported to be given to HQ’s parent company, Intermedia completely free of charge.

The app was created by Vine founders Colin Kroll and Rus Yusupov and features its now prominent spokesperson, Scott Rogowsky twice a day (3:00pm and 9:00pm ET). The game consists of 12 rounds and only those who make it through the final round are able to claim their piece of the winnings. The company is close to being valued at around $100 million but continues to give away money during its daily games, which is well into the millions.

HQ gets millions of daily player, with a record high of 2.2 million and has already partnered with some huge brands including Nike and Ready Player One. Prizes have ranged from $25,000 to $250,000, depending on the day. The game’s largest jackpot to date has been $50,000, won by a single player earlier this year.

But for most of us, how likely is it to ever cash in on any of the winnings, even if you do win? Most of those who make it past the 12th round end up only claiming a few dollars. The app’s leaderboard shows that the top five all-time biggest winners have accumulated about $25,000 each. Generally, the first, second and third-place users earn around $102, $102 and $96, respectively. Luckily, those who win but still don’t make as much are able to cash out at any point, after the company removed it’s $20 cash-out minimum earlier this year.

Although still insanely popular, the app is beginning to roll out ways to keep users playing daily. They recently released a new feature called “Streaks” which give players extra lives for consecutively playing the game multiple days in a row. In the olden days, you were only able to get an extra life for every person you turned onto the game. Hopefully, this new feature will keep active users and the funding rolling in for the rest of the year.
