Instagram Co-Founders are Leaving Instagram

In a world that is virtually run by Facebook and Instagram, the co-founders of Instagram are ready for their “next chapter”

In a statement released Monday, Kevin Systrom - Instagram’s co-founder and CEO, wrote that he and Mike Krieger were leaving the company.

Brief History of Instagram

Founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, Instagram launched in October of 2010 and was pretty much instantly a success story. Within the first two months of its inception, Instagram had over 1 million users and it has continued to grow over the last 8 years. In 2012, the company was bought by Facebook. In June 2018, Instagram had over 1 billion active monthly users.

The statement from Systrom said they were “grateful for the last eight years at Instagram and six years with the Facebook team. We’ve grown from 13 people to over a thousand with offices around the world, all while building products used and loved by a community of over one billion. We are now ready for our next chapter.”

There is a possibility that their resignation is coming after a clash with Facebook’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. An analyst at CFRA said he believed that Systrom and Krieger “may have wanted to run Instagram more independently than their parent company wanted.”

This was not confirmed by the Instagram co-founders, however they did mention that they were planning on leaving the company to “explore our curiosity and creativity again. Building new things requires that we step back, understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs; that’s what we plan to do.”

In a statement, Zuckerberg wished them the best saying, “Kevin and Mike are extraordinary product leaders and Instagram reflects their combined creative talents. I’ve learned a lot working with them for the past six years and have really enjoyed it. I wish them all the best.”

Krieger and Systrom were able to create an app that transformed the way that the world views pictures and we at The Sitch have no doubt that whatever they come up with next will be quite excellent.
